It matters because Anthropic is now offering a default answer to a problem that has slowed almost every serious agent team:
- how to run agents for a long time
- how to recover from failure
- how to keep state outside the context window
- how to avoid rebuilding the harness every time the model changes
That is real platform value.
But the launch also has clear boundaries:
- it is best for teams comfortable building around Anthropic's runtime model
- it is probably overkill for simple one-shot automation
- it does not remove the need for evaluation and human oversight
- cost and reliability will decide whether the product sticks
The skeptical community reaction is healthy here.
If your mental model is “Anthropic launched a magical autonomous employee,” you will be disappointed. If your mental model is “Anthropic launched managed infrastructure for long-running Claude agents,” you are reading this correctly.
